Binding Mercy and Truth
“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:3-4)
This verse speaks of keeping and practicing steadfast love (mercy) and faithfulness (truth) to the Lord which in turn should manifest in your actions towards others. To understand what steadfast love is you must understand how God loves. When the bible describes true love, it is the love God displays which is unchanging, unmovable, not prone to fluctuating “feelings” as the world would describe love, and displays traits that go past the normal selfish love that you see being described and portrayed in our world. (refer to 1 Corinthians 1-13)
For Christians it means if you display a Christ-centered love within your life, you will not only be obeying God’s command but in doing so will allow others to see and experience God’s love which will in turn be noticed and will draw them.
The same goes for being faithful to God. The word truth in its original context here meant faithfulness. Christians know Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Knowing the truth, you know to follow what is true. What is important to remember is the factor that this obedience and faithfulness can only come from a transformed life in Jesus Christ which in turn will allow the person to have the Holy Spirit work through them to display these values in their life.
