“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” (Psalm 118:8)
As I’ve recently been scrambling to finish off a lot of work before going on vacation, it was quite apparent today that my boss and I have a very similar trait. No it’s not the fact that we are both Chinese (although with that said, that might be the reason for many of our numerous similarities…); It was the fact that we both had a hard time delegating work to others and thought it easier to do it ourselves. The fact that we have full knowledge of what needs to be done in addition to having the ability to do the task makes it very difficult for us to hand it over to someone else.
But after reflecting on that a little further, it had me wondering, how much do I trust others? Although, I normally do tasks myself because I don’t want to burden people with things, I had to ask myself whether it was also due to the fact that it can be very difficult to fully trust others. They can easily let you down in terms of your expectations and you aren’t always guaranteed that the person will execute what you need them to do.
“Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:5)
In the same factor, this also reminds me to be mindful not to trust in my own strength because just like everyone else, I can and will fail to meet the goal when doing it through my own means.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
For God has not only given me all the resources, talents and abilities I use, but has also provided me the body, mind, soul, feelings, senses and life to use these abilities. Because of this, it’s only logic that the strength to excel with these talents comes from Him and Him alone. So to think we can rely on anything on our own is nothing less than prideful on our parts.
“It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.” (Psalm 18:32)
In the end, the final conclusion is still the fact that God is amazing because unlike us who fail to meet expectations, tasks and goals which results in distrust, Christ never fails in anything He sets out to do. Everything is according to His plan and He can be trusted to not only execute what He sets out to be done, but also to never disappoint those who rely on His mighty strength. When everyone and everything else fails, it’s comforting to know that you can trust God to never fail.
“And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
